Excessive sleep disorders

Do you have trouble sleeping through the night? If you do, there is a good chance you are suffering from some type of sleep disorder. Some things that interrupt sleep are temporary and nothing to be concerned about, but when your sleep patterns and interruptions cause disruption night after night, that is when you should consider seeing a doctor, especially if it is affecting your waking life. If you feel emotional changes, have changes in daily ability to carry out normal activities, or are experiencing physical changes, you may have somnipathy--the technical name for sleep disorder.

Sleep disorders symptoms

  • Snoring
  • Stop breathing during sleep
  • Choking in sleep
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking up several times a night
  • Feeling moody or irritable
  • Feeling tired even after a normal amount of sleep
  • Feeling foggy or not very alert during the day
  • Reliance on caffeine or other stimulants to stay awake

Types of sleep disorders

There are 3 primary sleep disorders that many people suffer from yet fail to address with their doctor- each of these can be dangerous sleep disorders--

Sleep disorder Insomnia- either be short term or a chronic this can also be early symptoms of another sleeping complaint or medical condition.

Sleep disorder Sleep Apnea- This is more than just snoring. Apnea is a condition that actually causes you to stop breathing for several seconds. Depending on the cause, Apnea can be dangerous to the point of being fatal. It should not be ignored.

Sleep disorder Narcolepsy- this condition causes a person to fall asleep without a warning. It is a neurological problem caused by a lack of hypocretin, the chemical compound in the brain that tells us when to wake or sleep.

Sleep disorder treatments

Other minor sleeping disorders include snoring, RLS (restless-leg syndrome), and PLMD (periodic-limb movement disorder). If you experience a sleeping disorder you should talk to your doctor. They will test your sleeping habits and give you a diagnosis based on the sleep study results. Sometimes the cure is as simple as losing weight or changing the type of mattress you sleep on. Other times you may need a cpap sleep machine, a prescription, or surgery for enlarged tonsils. Losing sleep and suffering from sleep disorders should not be ignored. Talk to your doctor if you suspect you or someone you love may be suffering needlessly from a sleep disorder. You may not only feel better, you may save a life.

Thanks Sa'ge- it seems so unimportant but the consequences are some times substantial. Many people with apnea can not get a job driving a public vehicle for instance because if how tired and unaware they are during the day. thanks for stopping by!

Dim- Thanks Dim. I appreciate your comments. Get checked out OK? You will feel better if you get a good nights sleep :)

Good information and certainly a little stirring and knudging for anyone who knows they have a sleep disorder but puts off doing anything about it. Very simply and clearly delineated. Thanks.

And you might consider a follow-up hub regarding other kinds of sleep disorders. There is the Sleepless In Seattle "stuff." The stresses of relationships ended, dreaming about a new relationship, not wanting to sleep alone after sleeping with someone else for x number of years, and so on. Sometimes, after someone close to us dies, we are afraid to sleep. Afraid we might die, and afraid of seeing his or her ghost!

Anywho, it would be a "fun" addendum.
