There are many avenues available for tutoring-- from local tutoring companies to tutoring online...or if you are the entrepreneurial type, you can own your own tutoring business.

Tutors can be a vital part of the learning process for students, especially if they find themselves struggling in a particular subject. Tutoring allows you to help the student succeed in areas they may have found difficult, and frustrating in the past.

You will need to put together engaging lessons to share with students every week, preparing for your time with them much like a teacher would. If you make the lessons fun, learning will become a surprising pleasure for your student. This will make their time with you doubly satisfying! They are not only getting the help they need, but they discover learning can be enjoyable.

One of the great aspects of jobs in tutoring is the flexibility it provides. If you are already employed, you can often supplement it with a part-time tutor position. The times of day you will most likely need to be available will be afternoon, evenings, and weekends. Most tutoring clients will need to have at least one session a week, for one hour each session. Becoming a tutor can require one or more of the following:

• A degree in the field you want to tutor

• List of references
  
• Professional expertise in the area you want to tutor
• Successful completion of coursework
  
• Completion of a tutor certification program (best)
• Specialty courses and certification for tutoring children with learning disabilities such as dyslexia (highest hourly rate typically).
  
• Fingerprinting, background checks, and TB testing may also required
• Access to contracts for your clients if you are self employed, along with other small business needs such as tax advice, advertising, etc.
  
• Liability insurance if you are self employed and it held at your location
  

There are three general levels of tutoring, each with varying pay scales.

• Level One- Minimum wage to $10 an hour. At this level, you probably won't need any formal certifications or degrees. You will need to have completed a course in the area you want to tutor in, and have gotten a "B" or better for a grade. This will show proficiency in the subject.Often you will find this kind of tutoring on school campuses and offered by a peer.
  
• Level Two- $10 to $40 an hour. here is where you will find the majority of your tutoring jobs. These are typically found at local tutoring centers or online tutoring companies. They will have higher degrees of requirements and may offer a certification program to qualify you. This is an excellent place to start.
  
• Level Three- $40 to $175. In this range, you will participate in one-on-one tutoring. Your expertise will be greater than the other two levels. Many people tutoring in this category are self employed and hold degrees in their field. Often the subjects are in higher demand or are more specialized.
  

There are many subjects where a tutor is needed. There are, of course, the typical school courses, but there are other areas too. Some students will hire a tutor to help them pass tests. Others will want to get extra help in order to excel in a particular specialty course. Adults may need help with computer programs, or learning how to take on a new skill. Expand your thinking to come up with other creative possibilities. Here are some of the standards:

• Trigonometry, calculus, physics and chemistry, algebra, geometry
• English and grammar
• Writing
• Standardized test preparation, such as the SATs.
• Learning a language
• Reading
  

As we have seen, tutoring can be a rich and rewarding way to earn a living. Starting out part-time may even lead into full-time employment. Your income from tutoring can be above average, and the work hours flexible. The best part about tutoring, however, is the knowledge that you have taken a struggling child, and helped them to discover they can be successful in school.

Start exploring your options by looking at some of the online tutoring sites, and then visit a few local tutoring centers. starting out in an established venue will allow you to build up a reputation.
